Palestinian man locks up his children in an abandoned cave in Hebron for 20 years

A Palestinian was arrested who kept his children locked up for 20 years in an abandoned cave in Hebron, located in the southern West Bank, according to the Palestinian police on August 27, 2008.

“On a mission to impose sovereignty of the law and order in a village in the Hebron province and while searching for weapons and drug smugglers, the Hebron police stumbled upon a man and his sister, both in their 30s, who were living in poor health and environmental conditions,” a police statement said.

“It turned out that their father had locked them up in a cave without any natural light or ventilation. The cave can be entered through a vault under the father’s house.”

Police investigations found that the mother of the young man and woman was dead and that their father had remarried. The father says that his children were mentally disabled and that he locked them in the cave to stop the whispers of the neighbors and their relatives.
