Freedom of Expression (Arabic World)
The Syrian Human Rights Committee has learned from an informed source in Aleppo that a former detainee, engineer Abd al-Sattar Qattan, 68, has died while undergoing dialysis in a hospital. Qattan spent more than 20 years in prison over three separate periods because of his opinions and beliefs. He was later denied permission to travel abroad for the medical treatment he desperately needed.

Border Guard soldier filmed their friends as they abused Palestinians in East Jerusalem, as shown by video footage filmed with a cell phone. The video, apparently filmed by a Border Guard soldier, reached Yesh Din today after the photographer evidently lost his phone, thus exposing the grave practices.

Discrimination Against Palestinians
A cancer patient from the Gaza Strip who is in critical condition did not receive a permit from the Shin Bet to enter Israel for treatment. Initially the Shin Bet denied Ahmed Abu Shawish entry to Israel but after Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) asked that he be allowed to receive urgent treatment at the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, the Shin Bet made the permit conditional on him undergoing questioning. Abu Shawish’s health did not allow him to answer the summons for questioning and now he is awaiting his fate.

The public prosecutor in the province of Qena, located in Upper Egypt, released Salim Mohammed Salim Khalil, a 70-year-old retiree, and his brother, Mohammed, a school principal, who are charged with locking up their sister, Sakina, for five years in their basement hoping to get her LE9,000 inheritance. She accused them of illegally detaining her and abuse.
